for 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒔 at gmtc-golden monkey trading company 金猿商社, 𝗺𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗶 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶 offers 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙝 𝙚𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚.

hosted in the privacy of her home, 𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶’s gathering centers the choreography between people, material, silence, space, and gesture. in seeking to imagine “a turbulent immanent field in which various materials collide, congeal, morph, evolve, and disintegrate,” drawing from Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things, the gathering unfolds through a sequence of actions in which edible matter is transformed into forms and movements that move hand in hand with the concerns arai carefully considers in her own studio practice. rather than seeking to restore wholeness, 𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶 asks: how can one shift perception to be surprised by what they see?

𝗺𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗶 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶 is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in new york city. she is interested in points of encounter, practices of embodiment, enfolding and unfolding aesthetics and the material and immaterial as interconnected.
