how do we trace the boundaries of a community, an art space, or an artwork?
𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 refers to an old british tradition in which members of a community—often led by a priest or elder—walk the perimeter of their parish, striking boundary markers with sticks. the ritual was a collective act of remembering and maintaining—preserving not only geographical knowledge but also the social fabric that supported communal life.
in this participatory performance, we accompany the superintendent of the golden gate building at 210 canal street—extending into neighboring tenants’ spaces and the building’s shared public areas. along the way, participants will engage in gentle gestures with hand-held branches—holding, passing, tapping, tracing—attuning to the building’s contours where care and connection extend into the surrounding community.
