as a part of the public program for ʙɪʟʟꜱ ᴀɴᴅ ᴡɪʟʟꜱ, currently on view at @ahlfoundation, we invite all to an open discussion to collectively determine the price of a limited-edition merchandise set by gmtc-golden monkey trading company 金猿商社, one of the participating art spaces in the exhibition.

the merch consists of porcelain chopsticks engraved with gmtc’s logo and finished with resin by creative manager 𝐡𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧 (whose invoice is featured in the exhibition), paired with a chopstick holder by artist 𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐚 𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐮 𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧 made from scrap fabric sourced through 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐫𝐤 @materialsforthearts. produced in an edition of twenty, the merch is intended to support gmtc‘s future activities.

by openly discussing how the merch should be priced, the session makes visible the processes through which value is assigned to cultural objects, taking into account labor, materials, artistic collaboration, and institutional sustainability. at a time when merchandise has become an important vehicle for sense of belonging and identity within independent art spaces—yet often falls short as a reliable source of income—the session asks: how much are we willing to pay for artist-made merchandise, and what forms of labor are recognized in its price?

𝐡𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧 @binvin.hrs is a designer and activator who searches collective environments across senses, space, materials, and technology. based in new york, shin serves as creative manager at gmtc-golden monkey trading company and holds an mps from nyu’s interactive telecommunications program.
