gmtc session #5
𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒕 and 𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒌𝒊𝒎 with jenny wu

october 17th, 4:30-7:30pm

about the performance:
“leach” — as audiences enter the space, they encounter a performer standing beside a leaky sink. her arms, bound by rings of cedar wood soap, are chained to the walls. witnesses are invited to wash their hands with the soap. through repeated, collective handwashing, the soap will dissolve and release the performer from her restraints.

💫 𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒕 is a performance artist whose conceptual work centers her body as a living archive. many of her performances unfold as social experiments that negotiate terms of agency and power with audiences. stewart’s performances have been supported by organizations that include the bronx museum, the shed, franklin furnace, a.i.r. gallery, silver art projects, marc straus gallery, marble house project, gallim, the watermill center, and the brooklyn arts council.

𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒕 routinely questions how live art can be documented and represented across multiple mediums. her photographs and videos have been exhibited at venues across the united states, including the mercury store, untitled space, nars foundation, goodyear arts, a.i.r. gallery, kellen gallery, and anthology film archives. her first series of prints is also held in the permanent collection of the mint museum in charlotte, nc.

💫 𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒌𝒊𝒎 is a seoul-born, new york-based curator and writer. he recently gained recognition in art in culture’s special feature “31 new faces from the world” and served as the 2022-23 curatorial fellow at columbia university’s miriam and ira d. wallach art gallery. his writings have appeared in artreview, hyperallergic, brooklyn rail, and artasiapacific, among others.
